When winters were longer and colder and the landscape was more watery the Fens often froze over and skating was a popular pastime. The region boasted some of the fastest skaters in the world and many people skated with special “fen runners” a type of skate and in the distinctive local style with hands behind their back. This design captures the nostalgia, the romance and the freedom of skating on frozen rivers on a crisp midwinter day.
